Time to Change It Up!

We’re deep in the throes of winter, and for many people that can mean only one thing一craving a change of scenery. However, wanting to pick up everything and move, no matter your motivation, is a major life choice and requires plenty of thought before you finalize anything. If you’re planning to relocate in the future, keep reading for a list of things to consider before you start packing to move!

How Far Will My Money Go?

One of the most common concerns when looking to move to a new state or country is how living costs will change. You can bet that if you’re moving from Wisconsin to California or vice versa, there will be some major changes in the cost of living. Looking to move to Alaska, Florida, Tennessee or even Wyoming? These states are among the few that do not collect personal income tax. If you are looking to move to or from any of these states, be sure you know how a situation like this will affect your budget. Your usual paycheck might not stretch quite like it used to!

How Will I Get From Place to Place?

If you live somewhere that’s rather spread out and are planning to move into a big city, will you still need your car? Check out the city that you’re planning to move to and see what their public transportation is like. Is there a great bus or subway system that can get you easily from place to place? Are you able to ride your bike to work? If the answer is yes, you might not need to bring your car with you to your new home, and can use your saved gas money to buy something extra special instead.

How Will I Know What City Is the Best Fit For Me?

Before you start looking for a home in a new state, make sure you research the cities that you are looking to potentially move to. If you have kids, you may be interested in what the school districts or community recreation programs offer in different places. If you are able, try to visit the locations that you are considering moving to so that you don’t feel culture shock in a brand new place! By taking the time to visit your new community and your potential new home, you can see where the locals go to eat, the hotspots, and maybe even meet some of your soon-to-be neighbors. You’ll feel better about your big move if you have a few familiar faces in town before you officially arrive.
